Why fractions works on a quiz-show board
Fraction errors are specific: adding denominators, comparing by the numerator alone, forgetting to simplify. A board with one column per skill shows you, in real time, which error the class is still making. If the Comparing column empties fast and Add and Subtract stalls, you know what Monday looks like.
Category ideas for fractions jeopardy
Five columns, five values each. Copy a set as it stands, or swap in the names of your own units. The board draws your categories in the order you type them.
Grade 3 and 4 foundations
On the Number Line asks teams to place a fraction between two marks on their whiteboard. Reveal the position and let teams judge their own; close counts if the reasoning is right.
Grade 5 operations
Which Operation? shows a word problem and asks only for the operation, not the answer. It is a 20-second cell that fixes the mistake most students make on tests.
Fractions, decimals and percents
Order Them gives three numbers in mixed forms. It is the hardest column for most classes, so put it fourth where teams reach it with points to spend.
How to mix difficulty from 100 to 500
The value is a promise to the class about how hard the question is. Keep the promise and teams will reach for the 500s.
- 100Name or identifyWhat fraction of the shape is shaded? Which is larger, 1/2 or 1/3?
- 200One ruleWrite an equivalent fraction for 2/3. Simplify 6/8.
- 300Operation with like or unlike partsAdd 1/4 + 2/4. Then: add 1/3 + 1/6.
- 400Mixed numbers or two stepsSubtract 3 1/2 − 1 3/4. Multiply 2/3 × 3/5 and simplify.
- 500Word problem or explainA recipe uses 3/4 cup per batch. How many cups for 5 batches? Explain why 1/2 is greater than 3/8.
Running fractions jeopardy with teams
Quiz Show Grid runs 2 to 8 teams from one screen, with a scorecard for each. These four rules keep every team working every question.
- 1
Fraction strips or a printed number line on every desk. Younger teams reach for a model before a rule, and that is what you want to see on the whiteboard.
- 2
Require simplest form only on cells worth 300 and up, and say so first. A correct unsimplified answer on a 100 still gets the 100.
- 3
After a reveal on an addition or subtraction cell, ask the team how they found the common denominator. One sentence. That is the sentence the next team needs.
- 4
Rotate the marker every cell. In fraction units the student who most needs the practice is the one who hands the marker to a friend.
Build the board in 3 steps
- 1
Pick or build a question bank
Open Quiz Show Grid and choose a bank from My Question Banks. No bank yet? Create with AI: pick the subject and grade, add a note about the topic, and it drafts 5 to 20 questions you edit before you play.
- 2
Set teams and categories
Choose 2 to 8 teams and name them, or let the game pick names. Type your category names, comma separated. Up to 25 questions fill one board at 100 to 500 points; a bigger bank adds a second board.
- 3
Start the show
Tap a cell and the question fills the screen. Press Reveal Answer (or the spacebar), tap + on every team that earned it, and Esc back to the board. Clear the board and Crown the Champions.
Fractions jeopardy questions, answered
How do I type fractions in the question bank?
Type them with a slash (3/4, 2 1/2) in the question text. For a visual model, project the fraction strip or number line on a slide beside the board and ask the question from the cell.
Is a 25-cell board too long for third graders?
Often, yes. Load 15 questions and the board gives three rows at 100, 300 and 500. That is a 20-minute game, which is about right.
Can I reuse the same fraction bank in other games?
Yes. A question bank is not tied to one game. The bank you build for the quiz-show board also runs the other Game Room games and the Arcade.
