Why ELA works on a quiz-show board
English language arts review has to cover reading, writing and language in one period, and the five-column board maps onto that. One column for literary elements, one for figurative language, one for grammar and usage, one for a short passage, one for vocabulary in context. The value ladder then separates naming a device from explaining what it does in the sentence.
Category ideas for ELA jeopardy
Five columns, five values each. Copy a set as it stands, or swap in the names of your own units. The board draws your categories in the order you type them.
Reading skills
Each cell is a two- or three-sentence passage followed by the question. Keep passages short enough to read aloud twice; the board shows the whole question at once.
Literature unit
Quote Detective shows a line from the novel and asks who said it, to whom, or why it matters. It is the column students fight over.
Language and writing
Fix the Sentence puts an error on the board and teams rewrite it on whiteboards. Thesis or Not? asks whether a sentence could open an essay and why.
How to mix difficulty from 100 to 500
The value is a promise to the class about how hard the question is. Keep the promise and teams will reach for the 500s.
- 100Name the termWhat do we call a comparison using like or as?
- 200Identify it in a sentence'The wind whispered.' Which device is this?
- 300Apply to a short passageRead two sentences. What is the main idea?
- 400Infer and citeWhat can you infer about the character, and which words tell you?
- 500Explain the effectWhy did the author choose a flashback here? What would change without it?
Running ELA jeopardy with teams
Quiz Show Grid runs 2 to 8 teams from one screen, with a scorecard for each. These four rules keep every team working every question.
- 1
Whiteboards for every team, and require text evidence on the 400 and 500 rows. 'She's nervous' earns 100; 'she's nervous because she keeps checking the door' earns the cell.
- 2
Read every passage cell aloud once before teams start writing. It levels the field for slower readers and keeps the game moving.
- 3
On Fix the Sentence cells, award the points to every team with a correct rewrite, not only the first. Several correct fixes are often possible.
- 4
Rotate the writer every cell. In ELA the strongest writer will otherwise hold the marker all period.
Build the board in 3 steps
- 1
Pick or build a question bank
Open Quiz Show Grid and choose a bank from My Question Banks. No bank yet? Create with AI: pick the subject and grade, add a note about the topic, and it drafts 5 to 20 questions you edit before you play.
- 2
Set teams and categories
Choose 2 to 8 teams and name them, or let the game pick names. Type your category names, comma separated. Up to 25 questions fill one board at 100 to 500 points; a bigger bank adds a second board.
- 3
Start the show
Tap a cell and the question fills the screen. Press Reveal Answer (or the spacebar), tap + on every team that earned it, and Esc back to the board. Clear the board and Crown the Champions.
ELA jeopardy questions, answered
How long can a passage be in a question?
Keep it to two or three sentences. The question fills the screen, so a short passage reads from the back of the room; a long one does not.
Can I use lines from the novel we are reading?
Yes. Short quotes in a review question are the kind of use teachers make every day. Keep each quote to a line or two.
Can the AI draft ELA questions for a specific skill?
Yes. Create with AI takes a subject and grade and a note such as 'inference, 6th grade, short passages' and drafts 5 to 20 questions for you to edit.
